11/17/2007 - Off to the Jack Daniels Distillery

So a little backstory:

So altho I don't drink too much lately, I'm a sucker for Jack on the rocks. Last weekend we rented a cabin out in Helen so of course I had to bring my bottle just in case. Well in my rush of packing it slipped outta my grip and fell to the floor. Those bottles are pretty strong so I wasn't worried. Didn't think too much about it landing on the plastic bottle cap. Yep, it smashed into multiple pieces and let pretty much the whole bottle out by the time I could get to it!

I'd post pictures of the casualty but it's too graphic!

So I'm thinking of places I could go this weekend and I can't think of much that's relatively close by. Tiff mentions the distillery there out in TN and the distance is just about perfect, about 220 miles out. A good opportunity to try out the new throttle lock and saddle/tail bags. So off to head to Lynchburg, TN to replace my bottle of Jack Daniels!

Ready to head out:

Head up through Chattanooga and onto I24. Scenery is pretty nice on this stretch, for an interstate at least. I wanted to stop by at Lookout Mtn for a little side trip but decide against it to keep time since I have to be at JT's that night for the BBQ. I need to fill up so I stop at the next exit, 161 I think, and aside from the actual road, it's pretty much nothing but water.

Back on the road and finally make my exit. Have to head through Tullahoma. Talk about a town that probably has not aged much in the past few decades! Very "old-school" and the town square looked pretty original. Lynchburg was pretty nice too and there are some very nice houses out on that particular stretch. Some smaller run-down plantation type houses made for some nice atmosphere.

Finally make it to the Jack Daniels Distillery:

The area around it was pretty nice and it looks like Lynchburg has a decent "old timey" feel to it as well:

I hang around for a little bit and get the bottle I came over 200 miles for. Going across the street of my house to the liquor store would have gotten the same thing, but that wouldn't have made much of a good ride!

It was kind of interesting how it's a dry county that the distillery is in and it took it all the way to 1995 until they could sell any of the whiskey there. Even now, they still can't actually serve it, just sell the bottles. They have a decent little setup there kinda like a small museum of their history, and they have free 1hr tours of the distillery to show it's history and the processes they use to make the famous whiskey. I didn't take the tour myself cause of time and Tiff mentioned she wanted to go, so now I have an excuse to go back!

Back home safe and sound:

Victorious!

Head over to JT's for the awesome BBQ they had there. Brought the bottle there for the festivities. I think Tiff enjoyed the stuff!

Altho many would think the trip was boring, taking interstates the whole way there, but it was a good chance to try out the throttle lock, which worked awesome! I brought tools just in case, and made some adjustments on my first stop, but after that and getting used to it, I can see how this is crucial for longer distance riding!

The bags worked awesome too and I was able to put all my cold weather gear in them and changed into regular clothes/shoes while at the distillery, so I didn't look like a complete goob!
